The Oasis: An Informal Space for Nature in the City
Yosh and Joe had many reasons to come to the terminal: to share and reflect upon their common identity and experiences, to escape the gentrifying neighborhoods in which they lived, and to drink beer and smoke pot and not be bothered. Closely intertwined with these motivations was their desire to be near the water and nature. BEDT could not be confused with a nature preserve, traditional beach, or large urban park, and it provided little in the way of an Olmstedian sense of landscape. But it did provide enough plant and animal life to convince many that this was a “natural” place removed from urban activity. Yosh sometimes referred to BEDT as “The Oasis” or “Our Oasis,” saying it slowly, emphasizing each syllable as he said it. For these men, Yosh in particular, this was their small bit of nature, a garden that provided them with both separation and relief from what seemed to them to be at times an unrelentingly urban city:
